Respect the Hinge

Language already contains the connections required to discover new meaning. Predictive Poetry begins by recognizing those connections rather than inventing them.

A hinge is the shared word that unites two adjacent word pairs. Each pair must be a genuine expression of ordinary language—not because the words rhyme, resemble one another, or merely suggest a similar idea, but because the expression already exists.

The hinge joins adjacent expressions while allowing each to retain its own meaning.

Approximate connections may appear clever for a moment, but they weaken the medium. Genuine connections create the possibility of surprise without abandoning coherence. They allow meaning to travel extraordinary distances through entirely ordinary steps.

To respect the hinge is to trust that language contains more possibility than we usually notice.
