A Way Into Predictive Poetry

If you followed the movement from one phrase to the next, you have already begun.

You do not need to know what a hinge is yet. You do not need to understand the Hinge Atlas, the difference between Carry and Spool, or what Predictive Poetry means by correspondence.

Those names become useful later.

First, language should move.

Predictive Poetry can be entered from many directions. Someone may arrive through a game, a correspondence, a saved trace, or a phrase passed along by a friend. There is no single correct route through the practice.

But there is a useful first one.

It begins with observation.

See It Move

A short trace reveals the premise more directly than a definition can.

Each phrase is ordinary. Each connection is real. One word carries forward and becomes part of something new.

The movement is local, but the journey can travel an extraordinary distance.

Before someone is asked to make anything, they should have the opportunity to notice that movement for themselves.

Make One Move

The rule can be understood quickly:

Each step must form a real phrase.

Understanding the rule is not the same as developing an ear for it.

The first move should therefore be accessible. One familiar phrase. One carried word. One playable continuation.

Success should arrive before vocabulary.

The participant does not need to explain what happened. They only need to recognize that the phrase continued and meaning changed direction without losing continuity.

Follow a Curated Route

One move reveals the mechanic. A curated challenge reveals possibility.

There is rarely only one playable continuation. Some choices approach a destination directly. Others wander, misdirect, recover, or reveal a route that was not initially visible.

A Featured Challenge demonstrates these differences without requiring the participant to plan the entire journey in advance.

The challenge teaches by allowing the participant to choose.

Play Independently

Eventually, guidance should recede.

Carry asks the participant to find the hidden word that several clues converge on. The rules remain binding, but the decisions belong to the player.

This is where recognition begins becoming fluency.

Spool asks the participant to inherit a word and navigate branching routes toward a visible destination. It offers a longer and more elaborate traversal for anyone who wants to continue exploring. It is not necessary to experience everything at once.

The purpose of this stage is simpler: make choices without being led through every one of them.

Make Something of Your Own

A game provides a destination. Compose does not have to.

A Spark, a Daily Thread, or an ordinary two-word phrase can become a beginning. The participant follows the hinge, revises the trace, and decides when something has taken shape.

Nothing created here must be published or sent to anyone.

It may remain private. It may be copied, saved, revised, or eventually carried into Workshop.

Compose is where the practice becomes personal—not because every trace must reveal something profound, but because intention now belongs entirely to the person making it.

Pass It On

Some traces feel complete in themselves.

Others seem to be asking for another voice.

A completed composition may become the opening of a Signal, an invitation to Community Hall, or something shared independently with a friend. The participant may also keep it private.

Correspondence is a possibility, not an obligation.

When another person responds, Predictive Poetry changes again. A trace is no longer only being extended. Two distinct intentions begin affecting the same movement through language.

The artifact becomes an invitation.

Then Choose Your Own Direction

This path is not a curriculum everyone must complete.

It is a way into the house.

See language move. Make one successful move. Follow a guided route. Play without guidance. Create something of your own. Decide whether to pass it on.

After that, the names of the rooms become useful.

Learn develops the ear.

Play exercises it.

Compose creates with it.

Signals carries it between people.

Community preserves and presents what emerges.

The Atlas supports the practice and, through deliberate contribution, learns from it.

Predictive Poetry can be described before any of this happens.

It becomes understandable through encounter.
